Cannabis decriminalization, legalization and acceptance in American society is growing. CBD creams and other cannabis and hemp-infused products are all the rage. With Mother’s Day approaching quickly, will a gift of marijuana be the 2019 version of bringing mom flowers?

The trend may already be in motin. According to Headset, a data analytics service provider for the cannabis industry, marijuana sales on Mothers Day weekend last year were higher than average weekend sales. Perhaps customers were buying mother’s day gifts, or perhaps finding a little something for themselves to make it through Mothers Day brunch.

Headset data showed the most notable sales increases came on the Friday and Sunday of Mothers Day weekend. The most significant product category sales increases were observed across multiple states and included drops, elixirs, tea, coffee, hot cocoa and chocolate. Personal care products rounded out the list of top sellers and included CBD and THC infused bath salts, soaks and scrubs.

On Mother’s Day itself  the analysts saw a large increase in the sales of pre-rolled joints. (readers can draw their own conclusions here).

As adult offspring become more comfortable with cannabis, Mom’s wine of the month club gift could be replaced by cannabis-infused chocolates or coffee. New Frontier Data’s study, Cannabis Consumer Series: Alcohol vs. Legal Cannabis Consumption in North America,   observed that many in the younger generation were comfortable replacing some of their alcohol consumption with cannabis. That comfort level in buying and consuming cannabis could translate into gift-buying.

LeafLinka cannabis industry wholesale e-commerce platform, tracks sales data as well. It found that the market share for infused topicals on Mothers Day weekend was triple its typical market share. Some of the current best sellers in the category according to LeafLink are Muscle Freeze CBD by Mary’s Medicinals of California, Body Balm by Colorado company Nordic Goddess and Extra Strength Dragon’s Balm created by Oregon’s Medicine Farm. Unsurprisingly, the top ten sellers all came from states where recreational use is allowed, along with medical use.

The unofficial cannabis holiday April 20th saw sales jumps in different categories.  According to  Flowhub, during the weekend, nearly 150k pre-rolled joints were sold. Overall, flower sales dominated 420, accounting for 54.1% of total sales. The second best selling product category was concentrates at 30.8%, followed by edibles at 11.3%.

Even mothers in more conservative states may be soon in possession of marijuana gifts. Marijuana Moment reported that the Texas House of Representatives just voted to approve a marijuana decriminalization bill.

An ambitious campaign to decriminalize psychedelics in Washington, D.C., is one step closer to placing their measure on the November ballot with the formal submission of tens of thousands of voter signatures. Organizers have been scrambling for weeks to collect enough signatures from D.C. voters by Monday’s deadline amid historically difficult circumstances: a global pandemic, months of stay-at-home orders and protests over racism and police violence that filled the streets of the nation’s capital. But with the help of innovative signature-gathering techniques and allies flown in from across the country, advocates said they had successfully submitted upwards of 35,000 signatures—more than enough to qualify the initiative. If approved by voters, Initiative 81 would make enforcement of laws against plant- and fungus-based psychedelics among the “lowest law enforcement priorities” for the Metropolitan Police Department. It would not, however, legalize or reduce penalties for the substa
